The Power of Writing Therapy

Find out more

Why Write?

A powerful quote I once saw really resonated with me: "All successful people have one thing in common: they are able to connect, persuade, and inspire through the power of story." How true this is! And I also realized that it doesn't just include successful people, but anyone in history who has ever made an impact.

Your story is important, not just for you, but for those you care about, love, and influence. But why exactly is that?

  • Connection: It provides connection with those who have had or are going through similar experiences.

  • Inspiration: Your life experience(s) is one of your most valuable possessions. By sharing things that you go through or have gone through in your own words, you have no idea who you may encourage and inspire to overcome in their own struggle.

  • Helps us know ourselves better: It's one thing to live in our own minds and experiences, but it's another thing to see it written. When we verbalize and/or write our story, it aids us identifying values, actions, characteristics, needs, etc. of who we are.

  • Builds courage: Sometimes, it can be frightening to tell your story. We worry about what someone else might think. Over time, it becomes easier the more we push through those first stabs of fear. Ultimately, it gives us courage in being ourselves.

  • It heals: It aids your mind in releasing feelings of anxiety, fear, and disconnection.

  • It holds us accountable: When we begin to write or verbalize our stories, a visible pattern can emerge. Are we continuously the victim? Or do we make the choice to be the hero/heroine?

  • It's a way of leaving a legacy: Humans have always had the need to leave something behind that is more powerful than them. Telling your personal, unique story is a way of doing just that.

Remember…the only unique contribution you can make will be through your own story, born of your creativity, choices, and voice. This is why writing can be a powerful therapeutic tool to aid you on your journey and why I am a huge advocate of writing therapy. I challenge you: if in doubt…write it down.
